Celebration of Paul Robeson's 125th Birth Anniversary, 2023

World Pays Tribute to Paul Robeson

Scholars from the US, India and China pay tribute to Paul Robeson in the year of his 125th birth anniversary. From the US is Anthony Monteiro, Du Boisian scholar and activist. Zhang Weiwei joins us from the China Institute at Fudan university. From India is Sumangala Damodaran, economist and music researcher.

All Men Are Brothers Because of their Music

The interview touches upon the unity of folk music, the Afro-Asiatic civilizational complex and the role of culture in the struggle for peace and freedom. Sumangala Damodaran is an economist, an artist and a researcher of music. She has written the book “The Radical Impulse: Music in the Tradition of IPTA” about the Indian People’s Theatre Association about a very significant cultural organization that emerged during India’s freedom struggle. She also has several albums and has collaborated with musicians around the world, particularly from Africa.

Paul Robeson @ 125 Years: Politics, Crisis in the US, Peace, Music and AI

We interview Du Boisian scholar Dr. Anthony Monteiro as we commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of revolutionary artist and freedom fighter, Paul Robeson. The conversation covers the life of Paul Robeson, the crisis in US society, the shift towards a multipolar world, Black spirituals and artificial intelligence.

Paul Robeson and Our Struggle for Peace and Democracy

A tribute to Paul Robeson on his 125th anniversary organized in Bangalore on 24th June, 2023 by the All India Peace and Solidarity Organization with support from Gandhi Global Family, Chitrakala Parishath, Gandhi Study Circle, Seshadripuram College, Bangalore Musical Association and the All India Trade Union Congress. 

The event featured a tribute video to Robeson and presentations and discussion by E.P. Menon, veteran peace activist, G. Ramakrishna, scholar and peace activist, and Uday Balakrishnan, author and former civil servant. The performance was by Bangalore Musical Association directed by Dr. Ashley William Joseph.

A dialogue between well known writer Martin Jacques, author of "When China Rules the World" and Sudheendra Kulkarni, former advisor to Prime Minister of India

Zhang Weiwei and M. K. Bhadrakumar

A dialogue between renowned Chinese intellectual Zhang Wewei, author of "China Wave: Rise of a Civilisational State" and M. K. Bhadrakumar, former Ambassador who has served in Soviet Union and other territories

Lin Minwang and Arun Kumar

A dialogue between Lin Minwang, professor of South Asian Studies in Fudan University and Arun Kumar, noted economist and former professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University on poverty elimination.

People's Interviews

Interviews from various sections of the people in Bengaluru, India and street interviews in Shanghai, China to understand their view of each other. The interviews were conducted in collaboration with Wave Media and Thinker's Forum in China.

Series of Events Held to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Indian Independence

A series of events to celebrate 75 years of the sovereign Indian state were held in Bengaluru, India. The effort was carried out under the Gandhi Global Family, and in collaboration with the Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation in Philadelphia, USA.

Comrade S.A. Dange: The Struggle for National Unity and Against Imperialism

S.A. Dange was a product of the Indian freedom movement that represented the strivings of the poor and working masses of people. He gave his life to the struggle against illiteracy, disease and poverty. He was moulded and shaped in the great labor struggles which took place in the Bombay mills, where he earned the respect and trust of working Indian people. More information here.

Women, Culture and Peace: Aruna Asaf Ali and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay

Through their lives, we addressed the role of women in the freedom movement, as well as how both these revolutionaries saw the struggle for Indian independence as part of the humanity wide anti colonial movement for freedom. Both figures were involved in the peace movement and the task of building unity across nations. More information here.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Our Single Garment of Destiny

A lecture by Pascal Nazareth, as well as a screening of the documentary King in the Wilderness  were held at the historic Indian Institute for World Culture to explore and commemorate the deep relationship between the Indian struggle for freedom and the African American liberation movement. An exhibition of over 60 photographs commemorated the civil rights movement and the Kings' visit to India. More information here.

Series of Events held to Mark the Centenary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China, 2021

Two online dialogues, as well as one in person event in Bengaluru, India were held over 2021 to mark the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, and to build on the possibility of peace between India and China. Events to Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Bangladeshi Independence

These events were held by the Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation in Philadelphia, USA.

Day 1

Presentations and discussion on the Bangladeshi struggle for liberation and its implications for our times. Panelists included Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad, Professor of Medicine and Nephrology at Temple University, freedom fighter in the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Day 2

Dialogue between Indian economist Prabhat Patnaik, Bangladeshi economist and freedom fighter Rehman Sobhan and African American intellectual and freedom fighter Anthony Monteiro on the lessons of the Bangladeshi war of liberation for our times. The discussion touched on the rise of China and the collapse of the Western world order.
